New professors are inaugurated at Uppsala University The Forum for South Asia Studies at Uppsala University is pleased to inform that two scholars that are working on South Asia have been promoted professor. Heinz-Werner Wessler, who holds the chair of Indology at Uppsala University and specializes in modern South Asian languages and cultures, will give his inaugural lecture on Thursday, 12 November at 14:20 in lecture hall IX (main university building) on the topic "Indiens enhet i mångfald: Traditionell mångkultur mot modern nationalism?." Kristine Höglund, Professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, has researched Sri Lanka extensively along many other cases. She will give her lecture on Friday, 13 November at 15:00 in the University main aula on the topic of "Demokrati i våldets skugga." |

Uppsala professor receives World Hindi Award during the “Vishwa Hindi Sammelan” As one among 40 awardees, half of them from abroad, Heinz Werner Wessler (professor of Indology, Uppsala university) was honoured with the “Vishwa Hindi Samman” (World Hindi Award) during the 10th “Vishwa Hindi Sammelan” (World Hindi Conference) in Bhopal 10.-12.9.2015. He will stay about six months in Sweden. He is affiliated to the Dept. for Linguistics and Philology during his stay. |

Initial reactions to the Nobel Peace Price awarded to two outstanding South Asians The Forum for South Asia Studies at Uppsala University notes with great appreciation that two outstanding South Asian characters have been awarded the Nobel Peace Price for the year 2014. Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzay have been awarded the price for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. "Kulturnatten" (cultural night) is a cultural festival all over Uppsala on the second Saturday in September. Like in the two years before, the FSAS participated in the Indian Bazar on 13. September. In our tent in the center of the town on Östra Ågatan we presented tools to learn Devnagari and Nastaliq scripts and put a selection of the posters from the "Poster women" exhibition on display that we had shown in a larger exhibition in Blåsenhus in spring. |

Lecture and book presentation by T.V. Paul “The Warrior State - Pakistan in the Contemporary World” On 23 May 2014, Professor T.V. Paul gave a lecture at Uppsala University and presented his new book “The Warrior State - Pakistan in the Contemporary World.” Paul is James McGill Professor of International Relations in the department of Political Science at McGill University. The lecture took place at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. The Forum for South Asia Studies had the privilege to enable several Master students, PhD candidates, and scholars of Uppsala University to discuss peace, conflict and development in Pakistan together with Professor Paul, MacGill University, Professor Sten Widmalm, Uppsala University, and Professor Ashok Swain, Uppsala University. |
Events in Honour of Rabindranath Tagore On 7 May the Forum for South Asia Studies, Uppsala University and the Indian Embassy hosted several events in honour of Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 1913. On this occasion a bust of Rabindranath Tagore was unveiled on campus. In the afternoon, three remarkable lectures discussed Rabindranath Tagore and his relation to Sweden. |

Poster Women: posters from the women’s movement in India On Friday, 25 April 2014 the Forum for South Asia Studies is opening a poster exhibition won the women's movement in India. At 14:15 Alessandra Consolaro will introduce to the exhibition with a short lecture at Blåsenhus, Gunnar Johanssonsalen (BH/14:K1209). The exhibition will move by 6 May to Engelska Parken, Entréplanen hus 16 for two more weeks. |

Conducting Elections in a Plural Democracy On Friday, 11 April 2014 at 10:00 the Forum for South Asia Studies at Uppsala University hosted a talk by Dr S.Y. Qureishi, the former election commissioner of India, at Uppsala University. Dr Qureishi spoke in front of some 80 guests about “Conducting Elections in a Plural Democracy”, and was joined by Ambassador Maria Leissner, Secretary General at Community of Democracies, for a lively discussion. |
Uppsala University establishes ICCR Chair on Indian Studies On January 22, 2013 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Uppsala University and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for a Chair of Indian Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Uppsala University. The agreement involves visiting professors from India, who will be residing at Uppsala university for one semester and participate in academic activities at various faculties. The Embassy of India, the Forum for South Asia Studies and the Secretariate for International Relations at Uppsala University where instrumental in promoting this partnership. |
